Super Six 2011: Tomas Leandersson comes from behind for another Super Six victory

2011-04-28 13:25

For most of the final stages of the tournament Tomas Leandersson was just one of the players in the middle of the pack, but when O´Learys Super Six in Skövde was to be decided, the Swedish multiple World champion took over and easily knocked out his opponents in the stepladder final.

It was the second stop on the Swedish Super Six Tour 2011 and Tomas Leandersson added another trophy to his CV. It was his fifth Super Six tournament victory and the third in the last two years.

Leandersson was in seventh place with two games remaining before the stepladder. He closed out with games of 225 and 233 to advance to third place. In the stepladder everything fell into place for Tomas, who defeated Helén Johnsson 219-185, Tobias Karlsson 244-192 and in the title match the number 1 seed Lars Pejstrup, 253-152.
“I had a really good focus during the stepladder. Earlier in the tournament I couldn´t shoot more than around 200 on fresh oil. It was surprising that I found such a striking touch in the stepladder”, Tomas said.

The big surprise of the tournament was Lars Pejstrup, a 45-year-old bowler from Mariestad, a small town located just 50 km from Skövde where the competition took place.
Pejstrup made it to his first ever Super Six finals by shooting 1242 in the Early Bird qualifier.
“After that I tried two times more and hardly made 1100. I was definitely not comfortable with this short oil pattern (Sydney/33 feet)”, said Lars Pejstrup.

On the final day, however, he played 15 games before the stepladder, averaging 217.2. When many  thought Pejstrup was going to fall away, he came up with a huge 686-series on the last three games before the stepladder. It lifted him to the number 1 seed position.
“I think I thrived on the excitement of being in my first Super Six final. I felt relaxed, except for that final game against Tomas. Then I was nervous and sweating”, he said.
Pejstrup explained that he has been competing in every Super Six during the last year and it has helped him to improve his game.
“These sport oil patterns are much more challenging than those we usually have in our league games. I have been bowling for 30 years but I have realized that there is still a lot to learn”, he concluded.
